History

George Mason University was founded in 1957 as a branch campus of the University of Virginia to serve the growing population of Northern Virginia. Originally known as George Mason College, it expanded from offering upper-division courses to becoming a four-year institution in the 1960s. In 1972, George Mason University gained independence from the University of Virginia and adopted its current name.
