History

Baylor University was founded in 1845 when the Republic of Texas granted a charter on February 1 of that year. The idea for the institution emerged in the early 1840s from leaders of the Texas Baptist Education Society, including R. E. B. Baylor and William M. Tryon. The university was first established in Independence, Texas, and Henry Lee Graves became its first president in 1846. During its early years, Baylor University emphasized classical education and religious instruction. In 1886, the institution relocated to Waco, Texas, consolidating with Waco University and establishing its permanent campus. Over time, Baylor University expanded its academic offerings, added graduate and professional programs, and developed research initiatives. Through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Baylor evolved into a comprehensive research university while maintaining its historic Baptist affiliation and Texas identity.
