History

Ball State University was founded in 1918 as the Indiana State Normal School, Eastern Division, after the Ball brothers donated a former private school campus in Muncie, Indiana, to the state. The institution initially focused on teacher education to meet regional demand for trained educators. In 1922, the school was renamed Ball Teachers College in recognition of the Ball family’s philanthropy. It became Ball State Teachers College in 1929 and expanded its academic offerings beyond education during the mid-twentieth century. In 1965, reflecting broader curricula and enrollment growth, the Indiana General Assembly approved the name Ball State University. Over the decades, Ball State University developed new colleges, residence halls, and research initiatives, evolving into a comprehensive public university serving undergraduate and graduate students across a wide range of disciplines.
