Belmont University

Belmont University is a private Christian university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1890, it operates on a 75-acre urban campus near downtown Nashville. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs across multiple colleges, including business, health sciences, law, music, and the arts. Belmont is particularly known for its programs in music and entertainment industry studies, reflecting its location in Music City. Belmont University was founded in 1890 in Nashville, Tennessee, as Belmont Women’s College by educators Susan Ledley Heron and Ida Emily Hood. In 1913, the school merged with Ward Seminary to become Ward-Belmont College, serving women through both collegiate and preparatory programs. In 1951, with support from the Tennessee Baptist Convention, the institution became coeducational and was reorganized as Belmont College, with R. Kelly White serving as its first president in this new era. During the late twentieth century, enrollment expanded and new academic programs were introduced, including a growing focus on music and business. In 1991, Belmont College officially became Belmont University, reflecting its broadened academic scope. In the twenty-first century, Belmont University has continued to expand its campus and graduate offerings, including the establishment of a College of Law and significant development tied to Nashville’s music industry.
