Winston-Salem State University

Winston-Salem State University is a public historically Black university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Winston-Salem State University was founded in 1892 by Simon Green Atkins as the Slater Industrial Academy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Established to provide education for African American students during the post-Reconstruction era, the institution initially focused on teacher training and industrial education. In 1897, it was chartered by the state of North Carolina and later evolved into Winston-Salem Teachers College as its academic offerings expanded. During the twentieth century, Winston-Salem State University broadened its curriculum beyond teacher preparation to include liberal arts and professional programs. It joined the University of North Carolina System in 1972 and adopted its current name in 1969, reflecting its expanded mission. Over time, the university developed strong programs in health sciences and nursing, and continued to grow its campus and facilities. Today, Winston-Salem State University remains a public historically Black university committed to access and academic advancement.
