History

Washington University in St Louis was founded in 1853 by civic leaders including William Greenleaf Eliot and Wayman Crow, who sought to establish a nonsectarian institution of higher learning in the growing Midwest. Classes began in 1854 in downtown St. Louis, and the university was initially known as Eliot Seminary before adopting the name Washington University. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Washington University in St Louis expanded its academic programs and moved to its new Hilltop Campus, now the Danforth Campus, in 1905 following construction associated with the 1904 World’s Fair. The School of Medicine formalized ties with Barnes Hospital in 1911, strengthening its clinical and research role. During the twentieth century, the university broadened graduate education, research activity, and campus facilities. In the twenty-first century, Washington University in St Louis has continued expanding global partnerships and research initiatives while maintaining its base in St. Louis, Missouri.
