History

Washington and Lee University was founded in 1749 as Augusta Academy by Scots-Irish Presbyterian settlers in what is now Virginia. In 1776, it was renamed Liberty Hall, and in 1782 it was chartered as Liberty Hall Academy after relocating to Lexington. The institution became Washington College in 1813 following a major gift from George Washington. After the Civil War, Robert E. Lee served as president from 1865 until 1870, expanding the curriculum to include programs in journalism, engineering, business, and law. In 1871, the college was renamed Washington and Lee University in his honor. Over the 20th century, Washington and Lee University developed its three academic divisions and strengthened its honor system and liberal arts focus. In recent years, the university has undertaken initiatives to examine and present its institutional history more fully while continuing to evolve academically.
