University of South Carolina-Columbia

University of South Carolina-Columbia is a public research university located in Columbia, South Carolina. Chartered in 1801, it serves as the flagship campus of the University of South Carolina system. University of South Carolina-Columbia was chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College in Columbia, the state capital, with the goal of educating citizens for public service and leadership. The college opened in 1805, and Jonathan Maxcy became its first president in 1804. During the antebellum period, the institution developed a classical curriculum and gained regional influence. The Civil War and its aftermath disrupted operations, and the university temporarily closed in 1861 before reopening in 1865. In 1906, it was renamed the University of South Carolina. Over the twentieth century, University of South Carolina-Columbia expanded its academic programs, established professional schools, and grew its research mission. After World War II, enrollment increased significantly, and additional campuses were created across the state. Today, University of South Carolina-Columbia serves as the flagship institution of the state system and a major public research university.
