University of Rhode Island

The University of Rhode Island is a public research university located in Kingston, Rhode Island. Founded in 1892, it serves as the state’s flagship public institution and offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs across a wide range of disciplines. The University of Rhode Island was founded in 1892 as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, established under the Morrill Act to provide practical education in agriculture and technical fields. Located in Kingston, Rhode Island, the institution initially focused on training students in farming and mechanical disciplines. In 1909, it was renamed Rhode Island State College as its academic programs expanded beyond agriculture. During the mid-twentieth century, enrollment grew significantly, particularly after World War II. In 1951, the Rhode Island General Assembly granted university status, and the institution became the University of Rhode Island. Over the following decades, URI broadened its academic structure, adding colleges and professional schools, and strengthening research initiatives, including oceanography and marine sciences. Today, the University of Rhode Island operates as the state’s flagship public research university, continuing to build on its land-grant heritage.
