History

Kansas State University was founded on February 16, 1863, when the State of Kansas accepted the site of Blue Mont College in Manhattan to establish its land-grant college under the Morrill Act. It became the first operational public institution of higher education in Kansas. Joseph Denison served as the university’s first president, guiding its early development as Kansas State Agricultural College. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the institution expanded its curriculum beyond agriculture to include engineering, home economics, and the sciences. It was renamed Kansas State University in 1974 to reflect its broader academic mission. Throughout the twentieth century, Kansas State University grew in enrollment, research activity, and campus infrastructure. Today, the university in Manhattan, Kansas, continues to operate as a comprehensive public research institution serving students across the state, the nation, and internationally.
