St. John's University-New York

St. John's University-New York is a private Catholic university located primarily in Queens, New York City. Founded in 1870 by the Vincentian Fathers, it is sponsored by the Congregation of the Mission and rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition. St. John's University-New York was founded in 1870 as St. John’s College by the Vincentian Fathers at the request of Bishop John Loughlin, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Brooklyn. Established on Lewis Avenue in Brooklyn, the college began with 47 students and a mission to provide Catholic higher education to the city’s growing immigrant population. In 1933, St. John’s College became St. John’s University, reflecting its expanded academic programs and professional schools. The university later relocated its main campus to Queens in 1954 to accommodate growth. Throughout the 20th century, St. John's University-New York expanded its offerings in business, pharmacy, law, and education, while opening additional campuses and international programs. Today, St. John's University-New York operates multiple campuses in New York City and abroad, continuing its Vincentian tradition of service and academic development.
