History

Regis University was founded in 1877 by exiled Italian Jesuits as Las Vegas College in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In 1884, at the invitation of Bishop Joseph Machebeuf, the Jesuits opened Sacred Heart College in Morrison, Colorado. In 1887, the institutions merged and relocated to northwest Denver, where the school became the College of the Sacred Heart under its first president, Dominic Pantanella. The college was empowered to grant degrees in 1888 and held its first commencement in 1890. In 1921, it adopted the name Regis College in honor of St. John Francis Regis, and in 1991 it became Regis University. Over time, Regis University expanded its academic offerings, added professional and health sciences programs, and developed online education initiatives. Today, Regis University in Denver continues its Jesuit Catholic mission while serving undergraduate and graduate students across multiple disciplines.
