History

Florida Atlantic University was established in 1961 as the fifth public university in Florida and opened its doors in 1964 in Boca Raton. Conceived to expand access to higher education in Southeast Florida, Florida Atlantic University initially operated as an upper-division and graduate institution, enrolling 867 students in its first class. Dr. Kenneth Rast Williams was appointed as the first president and led the university through its formative years. In 1984, Florida Atlantic University admitted its first freshman class, transitioning into a full four-year institution. Over the following decades, the university expanded its academic offerings, added multiple campuses across South Florida, and strengthened its research profile. The establishment of its independent medical school in 2010 marked a major milestone. Today, Florida Atlantic University serves tens of thousands of students and continues to evolve as a comprehensive public research university in the region.
