History

The College of Staten Island CUNY traces its origins to 1956, when Staten Island Community College was established as the borough’s public two-year institution within the City University of New York. In 1965, CUNY created Richmond College as an upper-division institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During the expansion of public higher education in New York City, both colleges served growing numbers of students under CUNY’s open admissions era. In 1976, Staten Island Community College and Richmond College merged to form the four-year College of Staten Island CUNY. The unified institution later consolidated operations on a new campus at 2800 Victory Boulevard. Over time, the College of Staten Island CUNY expanded its academic programs, including graduate study and selected professional fields, developing into a comprehensive senior college within the CUNY system.
