Early Decision: November 1, 2026, decisions mid-December

ED is binding. If Cornell admits you in December, you withdraw your other applications and enroll. Cornell's glossary is blunt about it: ED is appropriate only if Cornell is your clear first choice. One escape hatch exists, and it is narrow. An admitted ED student may be released from the commitment if the financial aid offer makes Cornell unaffordable, but only if that student actually filed for aid. No aid application, no release.

Note the calendar quirk: November 1, 2026 is a Sunday and January 2, 2027 is a Saturday. Common App submissions run to 11:59 p.m. in your own time zone, but your counselor and teachers are not working that weekend. Treat the Friday before as your real deadline.

Regular Decision: January 2, 2027, decisions late March or early April

RD is non-binding. Submit by January 2, 2027, then keep feeding the file: Cornell wants all other required materials in by January 19, 2027, and a mid-year report once your school issues first-semester grades. Decisions land in the late March / early April window, with a May 1, 2027 reply date.

The sub-deadlines most guides skip

Four dates sit behind the two famous ones, and missing them quietly weakens a file:

• Music supplement: submitted through the Applicant Portal after the Common App goes in, due November 6, 2026 (ED) or January 7, 2027 (RD). It is open to applicants in any college, not just music majors.
• Architecture, Art and Planning portfolios: AAP runs its own portfolio and submission requirements on a separate track. Check the AAP requirements linked from Cornell's first-year page before you finalize an ED plan, because portfolio prep is measured in months.
• All other required materials: January 19, 2027. Recommendations and school forms can arrive after your application, but not indefinitely.

There is no Early Action at Cornell

If you wanted a non-binding early round, Cornell cannot give you one. Your options are to use ED elsewhere and apply to Cornell in RD, or to pair a Cornell ED with Early Action applications to schools that allow it (non-restrictive EA programs generally do, but read each school's policy, since Single-Choice EA schools like Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Yale prohibit simultaneous ED). Cornell ED plus a restrictive EA is a violation you do not want on record.

Which "Cornell application" do you actually mean?

Five different applications share the name. Cornell University undergraduate admission runs through the Common Application. The Cornell Graduate School uses ApplyWeb. Johnson's MBA has its own rounds. Cornell Tech runs master's admissions in New York City. And Cornell College is a separate liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Cornell's course expectations are more specific than most Ivies.
