Coastal Carolina Acceptance Rate: 70% or 75%? Decoded
Sep 17, 202621 min read
21,028 applications. 15,828 offers. 2,677 students who actually moved into Conway. That is the whole Coastal Carolina admissions story for the freshman class that enrolled in Fall 2024, and it divides out to 75.27%.
The problem is that the rest of the internet shows you 70%, 75%, 79% and 80% for the same school without telling you which class year each number describes. Below: the arithmetic, the residency and round splits nobody computes, and the exact Fall 2027 calendar.
Key takeaways
- Coastal Carolina admitted 15,828 of 21,028 applicants for Fall 2024, a 75.27% acceptance rate.
- Newer data shows 24,549 applications and 17,192 admits, pushing the rate toward 70%.
- Out-of-state applicants were admitted at 74.9%, nearly matching the 76.8% in-state rate.
- Test-optional at CCU requires a 3.5 weighted GPA; transfers and 1+2+1 Nursing applicants must submit scores.
- Merit awards are automatic at admission, with a December 1 priority date before funding is exhausted.
Coastal Carolina's acceptance rate is 75.27% for the last fully reported class, and it is trending toward 70%
Coastal Carolina University's acceptance rate is 75.27% based on the Fall 2024 entering class: 21,028 applicants, 15,828 admitted, 2,677 enrolled. Newer Peterson's-licensed data covering the following intake shows 24,549 applications and 17,192 admits, a rate of roughly 70%. Both numbers are real; they describe different years.
Coastal Carolina University is a public institution in Conway, South Carolina, about nine miles inland from Myrtle Beach, enrolling roughly 12,000 students and competing in the Sun Belt Conference as the Chanticleers. It is the kind of school that shows up on a Northeast family's list in November when someone finally says the words "somewhere warm."
Here is the arithmetic every aggregator skips:
| Fall 2024 entering class | Count |
|---|---|
| First-year applications | 21,028 |
| Admitted | 15,828 |
| Acceptance rate | 75.27% |
| Enrolled | 2,677 |
| Yield (enrolled ÷ admitted) | 16.9% |
That yield line matters more than most applicants realize. When only about one in six admitted students enrolls, an admissions office has to hand out a very large number of offers to fill a class of roughly 2,700. Generous admit rates at schools like CCU are a mathematical consequence of low yield, not a signal that nobody is reading your file.
What changed for the following cycle
Application volume jumped. CCU reported around 24,510 first-year applications for the Fall 2025 intake, a roughly 16.4% increase, and the Peterson's-licensed profiles that syndicate to sites like CollegeData now show 24,549 applied and 17,192 accepted. That is a 70.0% admit rate.
So in two reporting years the rate moved from about 80% (Fall 2023 IPEDS, which is what CollegeSimply still publishes) to 75.27% to roughly 70%. Five points of selectivity in two cycles.
What that trend means for you, applying now for Fall 2027
Do not plan against 80%. Plan against something in the high 60s to low 70s. If the application surge continues at anything like its recent pace, the class you are applying to will be evaluated out of a pool north of 25,000 files. The practical translation: a 3.0 that would have been comfortably admitted three cycles ago is now closer to the bottom edge of the middle 50%, and the students taking the free money off the table are the ones whose files are complete before the December priority date.
Why you're seeing 70%, 75%, 79% and 80% for the same school
The spread exists because each site reports a different entering class and refreshes on a different schedule. CollegeSimply's 80% reflects Fall 2023 federal IPEDS data. BigFuture's 75.27% and US News' 75% reflect Fall 2024. Peterson's 70% reflects the newest intake. None is wrong; only one is current.
| Source | Rate shown | Class it describes | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| CollegeSimply | 80% | Fall 2023 (IPEDS) | Oldest federal snapshot on page one |
| Appily | 79% | Fall 2023-era intake | Licensed database, slow refresh |
| BigFuture / College Board | 75.27% | Fall 2024 (Common Data Set) | Two-decimal precision, CDS-sourced |
| Niche | 75% | Fall 2024 | Rounded CDS figure |
| US News | 75% | Fall 2024 | Rounded; also publishes an 84.2% early rate |
| PrepScholar (requirements page) | 75.3% | Fall 2024 | Rounded CDS figure |
| PrepScholar (SAT/GPA page) | 70% | Newer intake | Same site, second page, updated separately |
| Peterson's / CollegeData | 70% | 24,549 applied / 17,192 admitted | Newest intake in syndication |
Two pages on the same domain disagreeing by five points is not a scandal; it is what happens when a large content site refreshes URLs on different cycles. But it does mean you cannot treat any of these as gospel without checking the year attached.
The GPA discrepancy is the same bug
PrepScholar lists an average GPA of 3.8 on one page and 3.45 on another. CollegeSimply says the average unweighted GPA of admits is 3.72 and that 33% of admitted students hold a 4.0. acceptancerate.com publishes a middle-50% band of 3.0 to 3.7 and an average admitted GPA of 3.80 in the same table.
All of those can coexist. A middle 50% of 3.0 to 3.7 describes the range of admitted students. An "average" of 3.8 usually describes a weighted GPA, or a self-reported sample from a chance calculator, or enrolled students rather than admitted ones. Weighted versus unweighted alone moves a number half a point. If a page does not say which one it is using, the number is decorative.
How to date-stamp any acceptance rate in 60 seconds
1. Search the school name plus "Common Data Set." Section C1 gives applications, admits and enrolled by residency and gender, with the entering term printed at the top.
2. Cross-check on NCES College Navigator, which is federal IPEDS and always one to two years behind but never wrong about the year it claims.
3. If a third-party page's number does not match either, it is stale.
We walk through this exact method line by line in our breakdown of how to read a Common Data Set, and the same reconciliation problem shows up at other mid-selectivity publics, including Texas Tech's 69% versus 73% gap and the three-way split in Rutgers' reported rates.
Your real odds: acceptance rate by residency, gender, round and waitlist
Out-of-state applicants are not at a disadvantage at CCU. In Fall 2024, South Carolina residents were admitted at 76.8% (4,180 of 5,442) and nonresidents at 74.9% (11,591 of 15,479). International applicants were admitted at 53.3% (57 of 107). Nonresidents made up nearly three-quarters of the applicant pool.
| Group | Applied | Admitted | Admit rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Carolina residents | 5,442 | 4,180 | 76.8% |
| Out-of-state (US) | 15,479 | 11,591 | 74.9% |
| International | 107 | 57 | 53.3% |
| All applicants | 21,028 | 15,828 | 75.3% |
Read that table twice. At most flagship publics, the out-of-state pool is the harder pool. At Coastal Carolina it is the main pool, and the admit rate barely moves. CCU recruits aggressively in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic because nonresident students fund the institution and because a warm-weather campus 15 minutes from the Atlantic sells itself to families in New Jersey and Connecticut. If you are applying from out of state, you are the target demographic, not the exception.
The gender gap nobody explains
Peterson's-licensed data on the newer intake shows a female admit rate of 73% against a male admit rate of 65%. That is an eight-point spread, and no ranking page interprets it.
The most likely driver is academic profile mix rather than any thumb on the scale: national data consistently shows female applicants graduating high school with higher GPAs and stronger core-course completion. CCU weighs core GPA heavily, so a pool difference shows up as an admit-rate difference. Practical takeaway for male applicants: your core-course transcript is doing more work here than you think, and a thin junior-year schedule is the thing most likely to sink an otherwise fine file.
The 84.2% early acceptance rate
US News publishes an early acceptance rate of 84.2% for Coastal Carolina against an overall rate of 75%. That nine-point gap is the single most-cited and least-explained number on this search result page.
What it is telling you: students who apply by the October or November deadlines are, on average, better prepared, more decided and more likely to have complete files. Early Decision applicants are also declaring they will enroll, which helps yield.
What it is not telling you: that submitting in October converts a 2.7 into an admit. The applicant is doing most of the work in that number, not the round. The honest reason to apply early at CCU is money and calendar control, which is a bigger deal here than the admit-rate bump. Our guide to priority deadlines versus regular deadlines explains why that gap is usually selection effect rather than a scoring advantage.
Waitlist reality
In the 2024-25 cycle, CCU offered 181 students a spot on the waitlist. 135 accepted the offer. 60 were eventually admitted. That is a 44% admit rate among students who stayed on the list.
That is unusually good odds for a waitlist, and it is also a tiny list, which tells you the class is essentially built from the regular pool. If you land there, stay on it and send a short, specific update. Our letter of continued interest template covers what to include and what to leave out.
What GPA and test scores you actually need (CCU's numbers, not the aggregators')
Coastal Carolina's own admissions materials publish a middle 50% GPA of 3.0 to 3.7, SAT of 1020 to 1170, and ACT of 20 to 24. Third-party sites list SAT ranges of 1050 to 1220 and ACT of 21 to 26 because those reflect enrolled students who chose to submit scores, a self-selected higher-scoring group.
| Metric | CCU's published range | Third-party aggregators |
|---|---|---|
| GPA (middle 50%) | 3.0 – 3.7 | 3.45 to 3.8 "average" |
| SAT (middle 50%) | 1020 – 1170 | 1050 – 1220 |
| ACT (middle 50%) | 20 – 24 | 21 – 26 |
The gap is 30 to 50 points on the SAT, and it exists for one reason: under a test-optional policy, only students with scores they like submit them. Reported ranges rise even when the admitted class does not get stronger. College Board's own profile flags this caveat explicitly, which is why its enrolled-submitter range (1050 to 1142) is narrower than Niche's.
The 20 core courses
CCU evaluates you on a defined set of 20 college-preparatory core courses, not your full transcript GPA. Weightlifting and teacher's aide do not count. English, math through at least Algebra II, lab sciences, social studies, foreign language and the rest of the academic block do.
This is the most actionable fact on this page for a junior: recalculate your GPA using only core academic courses. If that number is lower than your school-reported GPA, that is the number admissions is looking at. If it is higher, you are in better shape than you think.
Superscoring
Coastal Carolina superscores, meaning it takes your highest section scores across test dates. If you sat the SAT twice and got 580 Reading / 520 Math, then 530 Reading / 590 Math, CCU reads 1170. That is at the top of its own published middle 50%. One more sitting is often the cheapest 40 points available to you.

Get startedTest-optional at CCU has a catch most guides miss
Coastal Carolina's test-optional policy has an eligibility floor: you need a 3.5 weighted GPA to apply without scores. Transfer applicants are not eligible for test-optional review, and 1+2+1 Nursing applicants must submit scores. Applying without scores can also disqualify you from South Carolina's Palmetto Fellows and LIFE scholarships unless you rank in the top 30% of your class.
This is the block that page-one results skip. Most of them write "CCU is test optional" and move on. Read the university's test-optional page and the conditions are right there.
Three consequences worth sitting with:
1. If your weighted GPA is below 3.5, test-optional is not open to you. You must submit an SAT or ACT. Students in the 3.0 to 3.4 band, which is inside CCU's admitted middle 50%, are exactly the group that assumes test-optional applies to everyone. It does not.
2. Transfers must test. If you are planning a year at community college and a transfer in, the optional route closes. CCU also caps transfer credit at 90 hours from a four-year institution and 76 from a two-year.
3. Skipping the test can cost you five figures. South Carolina's Palmetto Fellows and LIFE scholarships carry test-score requirements that are waived only for students in the top 30% of their graduating class. A South Carolina resident who goes test-optional, sits outside the top 30%, and then discovers the LIFE requirement in April has made an expensive scheduling decision.
CCU's merit review itself is holistic. The factors it names are core-course GPA, curriculum rigor, class rank, recommendations, a writing sample and a resume. That list is short enough to be a checklist, which is exactly how you should use it.
Fall 2027 deadlines: the calendar that decides your outcome
For Fall 2027 entry, Coastal Carolina's Early Decision deadline is October 15, 2026, with a decision by December 1 and a binding deposit due January 15, 2027. Early Action closes November 15, 2026 with decisions by December 15. Regular Decision closes February 1, 2027 with decisions by March 1 and a May 1 deposit.
| Round | Apply by | Decision by | Deposit due | Binding? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision | Oct 15, 2026 | Dec 1, 2026 | Jan 15, 2027 | Yes |
| Early Action | Nov 15, 2026 | Dec 15, 2026 | May 1, 2027 | No |
| Regular Decision | Feb 1, 2027 | Mar 1, 2027 | May 1, 2027 | No |
| Merit priority date | Dec 1, 2026 | n/a | n/a | Not a deadline, but the expensive one |
One caution: CCU's admissions FAQ and its Common App listing have shown different October dates for Early Decision (Oct 15 versus Oct 19). Before you build your calendar, confirm the date on Coastal Carolina's admissions site and inside your own Common App dashboard, and use the earlier of the two.
The application fee
The first-year application fee is $60. Several profiles still list $45, which is stale. Fee waivers are available, and CCU handles them through an email request to admissions rather than burying the process in a form. If cost is a barrier, ask. Counselors request these routinely and nobody at the office finds it unusual.
Does CCU have rolling admissions?
Not in the technical sense. It runs three defined rounds with published notification dates. In practice, decisions go out steadily and applications received after February 1 are still reviewed on a space-available basis. The difference matters because "they'll take me in April" and "they'll take me in April with money" are two very different statements.
Money: automatic merit awards and what admission is worth in dollars
Coastal Carolina merit awards are automatic at admission. There is no separate scholarship application, no appeal process, and a student receives one award. The fall priority application date for freshmen is December 1, and CCU's own language indicates funding is awarded until it is exhausted.
That single paragraph is the reason to apply in October or November rather than in January. You are not fighting for a nine-point admit-rate bump. You are getting in front of a finite pool of money.
| 2024-25 published cost | In-state | Out-of-state |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $12,340 | $30,328 |
| Room and board | $11,418 | $11,418 |
| Subtotal | $23,758 | $41,746 |
Average need-based aid is reported at $10,693 and the average merit award at $6,410. Note that Peterson's-licensed profiles show $11,640 in-state and $31,302 out-of-state, a disagreement with CCU's own published figures that comes down to which fees are bundled. Use the university's numbers.
Two pricing facts that change the out-of-state math:
- CCU held in-state tuition flat for 2025-26, the seventh consecutive year without an increase, while out-of-state tuition rose about 1%.
- Out-of-state merit is typically structured as a named award stacked with a university tuition waiver. For strong nonresident applicants, that combination closes a large share of the roughly $18,000 residency gap. This is why CCU functions as a genuine value option for Northeast families rather than a warm-weather luxury.
Before you commit to anything, run CCU's net price calculator through the financial aid office's site with your actual family numbers. Sticker price is a starting bid. Then compare packages side by side using our step-by-step financial aid comparison guide, and check whether you are leaving outside money on the table with our guide to college grants.

Get startedIs Coastal Carolina a reach, target or likely school for you?
For a student with a 3.5+ core GPA and a full college-prep curriculum, Coastal Carolina is a likely school. At 3.0 to 3.4 with rigor and an SAT near 1100, it is a solid target. Below a 3.0, or with gaps in the 20 core courses, it becomes a genuine reach regardless of the 70%-plus admit rate.
| Your profile | CCU is | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| 3.8+ core GPA, rigorous schedule, SAT 1150+ | Likely, and a merit candidate | Apply EA by Nov 15, submit scores, target the largest award tier |
| 3.3 – 3.7, solid core courses | Target leaning likely | Apply by Dec 1 priority date, submit scores if at or above 1100 |
| 3.0 – 3.2 | Target with conditions | Test-optional is closed to you below 3.5 weighted; sit the SAT, superscore |
| Below 3.0 or missing core courses | Reach | Address the transcript gap first; consider the transfer path, but note transfers must test |
What "likely" does not mean
It does not mean applying in March with an incomplete file. It does not mean going test-optional with a 3.2 (you cannot). And it does not mean the merit money is still there when you get around to it.
Families who treat a likely school casually are the ones who end up choosing between a $41,000 sticker price and a gap year. A likely school done properly is the single best financial instrument on your list.
The comparison set
East Coast families usually stack CCU against UNC Wilmington and the College of Charleston. Both publish their own Common Data Sets, and the honest move is to pull Section C1 from each and compare the same line: applications, admits, admit rate, entering term. Do not compare a Niche card for one school against a CDS for another; you will be comparing different years and different definitions. If you are still building the list itself, our college choice framework and school database will help you balance reach, target and likely properly.
How to convert a 70–75% admit rate into an actual offer (and a bigger award)
A high acceptance rate changes the question you should be asking. Nobody at CCU is going to reject a prepared applicant with a clean core transcript. The real competition is for the money, and the money is decided by the same file.
The four things to evidence, in order of weight:
1. Core GPA across the 20 required courses. Recalculate it yourself. If there is a hole (no Algebra II, a missing lab science, two years of language instead of three), fix it senior year or explain it.
2. Curriculum rigor. In a merit review, an AP or dual-enrollment schedule with a 3.5 frequently outperforms an unweighted 3.8 of easy electives. Rigor is the tiebreaker between award tiers.
3. Class rank. It is considered in admission and it is the thing that can waive a test requirement for South Carolina scholarships. If you are top 30%, say so clearly.
4. The optional materials. Writing sample, recommendation and resume go to the merit committee. A writing sample about one specific thing you did, with a real scene in it, outperforms a general statement of ambition every time.
A six-week plan from today to the December 1 priority date
- Weeks 1–2: Recalculate core GPA. Register for the next SAT or ACT sitting if your weighted GPA is under 3.5 or you are chasing Palmetto Fellows or LIFE. Ask your counselor for a fee waiver if you need one.
- Week 3: Draft the writing sample. One story, one scene, one thing it proves about you. Our breakdown of Common App essay prompts with real examples is a faster starting point than a blank page.
- Week 4: Request the recommendation with a one-page brag sheet attached. Build the resume; specificity beats length.
- Week 5: Submit. Early Action closes November 15, which is two weeks ahead of the merit priority date, so you have buffer.
- Week 6: Confirm receipt of transcript and scores, then file the FAFSA and run the net price calculator. Before you hit send on anything, it is worth pressure-testing the weakest part of your application.
Do this part with a team instead of a spreadsheet
Most families handling a list like this are doing it with a shared doc, a group text and a lot of guessing about which deadline actually matters. The alternative used to be a private counselor at $10,000 to $20,000 per student, which our breakdown of college consulting costs walks through in detail.
Unive is an AI admissions platform built by Yale graduates that runs the whole process in one workspace: an application roadmap that tracks CCU's October, November and December dates alongside every other school on your list, an essay grader that gives line-level feedback on the writing sample the merit committee reads, a profile evaluator that shows where your core-course record and activities sit against a school's admitted band, and scholarship matching that surfaces awards like Palmetto Fellows and LIFE before their test requirements become a problem. Students using Unive see a 3.48x higher acceptance rate. It is a paid subscription with a 7-day money-back guarantee, and 1-on-1 mentoring with top-school graduates is available when you want a human read.

Coastal Carolina acceptance rate FAQ
Is Coastal Carolina hard to get into?
No. With an acceptance rate between 70% and 75.27% depending on the class year reported, Coastal Carolina admits most applicants and is best classified as lightly selective. A student with a 3.3 core GPA and a full college-preparatory curriculum is a strong candidate. The competitive part is merit money, which is awarded automatically at admission until funding runs out after the December 1 priority date.
What GPA do you need for Coastal Carolina?
CCU publishes a middle 50% GPA of 3.0 to 3.7 for admitted students, calculated on 20 required college-preparatory core courses rather than your full transcript. Third-party sites quoting 3.72 to 3.8 are usually reporting weighted GPAs or enrolled-student averages. A 3.5 weighted GPA is also the minimum to apply test-optional.
Does Coastal Carolina require SAT or ACT?
CCU is test-optional, with conditions. You need a 3.5 weighted GPA to apply without scores. Transfer applicants are not eligible for test-optional review, and 1+2+1 Nursing applicants must submit scores. CCU superscores, taking your best section results across test dates. Its published middle 50% is 1020 to 1170 SAT and 20 to 24 ACT.
Is it easier to get into Coastal Carolina out of state?
Almost identical. In Fall 2024, South Carolina residents were admitted at 76.8% (4,180 of 5,442) and out-of-state applicants at 74.9% (11,591 of 15,479). Nonresidents submitted nearly three times as many applications as residents. CCU actively recruits Northeast and Mid-Atlantic students and offsets the tuition gap with named awards paired with university tuition waivers.
What is Coastal Carolina's early action acceptance rate?
US News reports an early acceptance rate of 84.2% for Coastal Carolina, roughly nine points above the overall rate. That gap mostly reflects who applies early: better-prepared students with complete files, plus binding Early Decision applicants. The stronger reason to apply early is the December 1 merit priority date, since CCU awards merit scholarships until funding is exhausted.
Does Coastal Carolina have rolling admissions?
Not formally. CCU runs three rounds: Early Decision (October 15), Early Action (November 15) and Regular Decision (February 1), each with a published notification date. Applications arriving after February 1 are generally still reviewed on a space-available basis, but late applicants typically miss the December 1 merit priority date and the scholarship funding tied to it.
How much is the Coastal Carolina application fee and can it be waived?
The first-year application fee is $60. Profiles listing $45 are out of date. Fee waivers are available, and CCU handles requests by email to the admissions office rather than through a separate form. Counselors request these routinely, and College Board or NACAC waiver eligibility also applies. Ask before you pay.
Can I get into Coastal Carolina with a 2.8 GPA?
It is possible but not likely without support elsewhere in the file. A 2.8 sits below CCU's published 3.0 to 3.7 middle 50%, and you would be ineligible for test-optional review, so an SAT or ACT near or above 1100 becomes close to mandatory. Strong senior-year rigor, an upward grade trend and a specific writing sample are your best levers.
Does applying Early Decision to CCU improve my chances?
Early applicants are admitted at 84.2% versus 75% overall, but most of that gap reflects applicant quality rather than a round-specific advantage. ED is binding: apply by October 15, 2026, hear by December 1, and pay a nonrefundable deposit by January 15, 2027. Only apply ED if CCU is your clear first choice and the cost works without comparing offers.
When will I hear back from Coastal Carolina?
By December 1, 2026 for Early Decision, by December 15, 2026 for Early Action, and by March 1, 2027 for Regular Decision. Deposits are due January 15, 2027 for ED and May 1, 2027 for the other rounds. Waitlisted students hear later; in the 2024-25 cycle, 60 of the 135 students who accepted a waitlist spot were admitted.
