History

Xavier University was founded in 1831 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by Bishop Edward Fenwick as the Athenaeum, a Catholic institution dedicated to religious and liberal arts education. In 1840, the Society of Jesus assumed control, renamed it St. Xavier College, and appointed Rev. John Anthony Elet as its first Jesuit president. The institution moved to its present location in the Evanston area of Cincinnati in 1912. St. Xavier College officially separated from St. Xavier High School in 1919 and adopted the name Xavier University in 1930. Although women attended certain divisions earlier, Xavier University became fully coeducational in 1969. The merger with Edgecliff College in 1980 expanded academic offerings. Over time, Xavier University developed into a comprehensive Jesuit university offering undergraduate and graduate programs while maintaining its historic Catholic mission.
