University of Washington-Seattle Campus is a public research university located in Seattle, Washington. University of Washington-Seattle Campus was founded in 1861 as the Territorial University of Washington, opening on November 4 of that year in downtown Seattle. Established to serve the educational needs of the Washington Territory, the institution began with Asa Mercer as its first president and teacher. In its early decades, the university faced financial instability and low enrollment but gradually expanded its curriculum and facilities. In 1895, University of Washington-Seattle Campus relocated to its present site near Union Bay, where Denny Hall became the first building on the new campus. During the 20th century, the university grew significantly, adding professional schools, expanding research programs, and increasing enrollment. Following World War II, federal research funding and regional population growth accelerated its development.
