History

University of Northern Colorado was founded in 1889 as the State Normal School of Colorado in Greeley, with a mission to train teachers for the state’s public schools. The institution opened to students in 1890 under its first president, Thomas J. Gray. In 1911, it became Colorado State Teachers College as it expanded to offer four-year bachelor’s degrees, and graduate programs began soon after. The name changed to Colorado State College of Education in 1935 and then to Colorado State College in 1957, reflecting a broader academic scope beyond teacher preparation. In 1970, the institution adopted the name University of Northern Colorado, marking its transition to full university status. Over time, University of Northern Colorado developed additional colleges, expanded graduate offerings, and established a comprehensive public university presence in northern Colorado.
