History

The University of North Texas was founded in 1890 in Denton, Texas, originally as Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. Established to prepare teachers for the growing public school system in North Texas, the institution opened with a small group of students and quickly expanded. In 1894 it became North Texas Normal College, and in 1901 it was designated a state normal school. Over the twentieth century, the University of North Texas evolved beyond teacher education, adding liberal arts, sciences, and graduate programs. It became North Texas State University in 1961, reflecting its broader academic scope, and adopted the name University of North Texas in 1988. Today, the University of North Texas is a public research university serving tens of thousands of students and playing a central role in higher education in the Dallas–Fort Worth region.
