Tufts University

Tufts University is a private research university located in Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts, with additional campuses in Boston, Grafton, and Talloires, France. Founded in 1852 as Tufts College, it evolved from a small liberal arts institution into a comprehensive research university. Tufts comprises multiple schools, including the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and professional schools in medicine, dental medicine, and veterinary medicine. Tufts University was founded in 1852 in Medford, Massachusetts, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts chartered Tufts College. Established by Universalist leaders seeking a nonsectarian institution of higher learning, the college began under its first president, Hosea Ballou II, in 1853. Engineering instruction was introduced in 1865, reflecting the growing demand for technical education during the Industrial Revolution. In 1892, Tufts began coeducation with the creation of Jackson College for Women. During the early twentieth century, the university expanded its professional programs, including medicine and dental medicine, and broadened its academic offerings. The institution officially became Tufts University in 1954, marking its transition from a small liberal arts college to a research university. Since the late twentieth century, Tufts University has continued to expand its graduate and international programs while maintaining its campus in the Medford and Somerville area.
