California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo was founded in 1901 when Governor Henry Gage signed legislation establishing the California Polytechnic School in San Luis Obispo, California. The school opened classes in 1903 with a focus on agricultural and mechanical training at the secondary level. Under early leaders including Leroy Anderson and later Julian A. McPhee, the institution expanded its academic scope and transitioned from a vocational school to a degree-granting college. By 1940, it began offering bachelor’s degrees, and in 1947 it was renamed California State Polytechnic College. In 1960, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo became part of the newly formed California State University system. The institution received its current name in 1972.
