History

Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi was founded in 1947 as the University of Corpus Christi, a private Baptist institution in Corpus Christi, Texas. After Hurricane Celia severely damaged the campus in 1970 and financial challenges mounted, the State of Texas authorized the creation of a public institution on the site. In 1971 it became Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, later renamed Corpus Christi State University in 1977. In 1989, the institution joined the Texas A&M University System, and in 1993 it adopted the name Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. Over the following decades, Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi expanded its academic offerings, developed graduate and doctoral programs, and strengthened research initiatives, particularly in marine and coastal studies. Today, it operates as a comprehensive public research university serving the Gulf Coast region.
