History

East Carolina University was founded in 1907 when the North Carolina General Assembly chartered the East Carolina Teachers Training School to prepare teachers for the state’s public schools. The institution opened in Greenville, North Carolina, in 1909 with Robert Herring Wright as its first president. In 1920, it became East Carolina Teachers College and expanded to a four-year curriculum, awarding bachelor’s degrees. Graduate programs began in the 1920s, and in 1951 the name changed to East Carolina College to reflect a broader liberal arts mission. In 1967, the institution achieved university status as East Carolina University. It joined the University of North Carolina System in 1972. Over time, East Carolina University added professional schools in medicine, dentistry, and other health sciences, evolving into a comprehensive public research university serving eastern North Carolina.
