Temple University

Temple University was founded in 1884 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Baptist minister Russell Conwell, who began offering night classes to working-class residents seeking access to higher education. These early classes, held in the basement of Grace Baptist Church, grew rapidly and led to the creation of Temple College, with Conwell serving as its first president. In 1907, the institution was officially incorporated as Temple University. During the 20th century, Temple University expanded its academic programs, added professional schools including law and medicine, and developed a larger campus in North Philadelphia. After World War II, enrollment increased significantly, and new facilities were constructed to support research and instruction. In 2016, Temple was classified as a research university with very high research activity. Today, Temple University continues to evolve as a major public institution serving students in Philadelphia and beyond.
