History

Saint Leo University was founded in 1889 in St. Leo, Florida, by Benedictine monks who also established Saint Leo Abbey. Originally known as Saint Leo College, the institution opened its doors in 1890 as one of the first Catholic colleges in the southern United States and the first in Florida. Leo Haid, a Benedictine abbot, served as its first president. In its early decades, Saint Leo operated at times as a military college and preparatory school while adapting to changing educational needs. The college resumed offering bachelor’s degrees in 1959, marking a significant academic expansion. In 1999, Saint Leo College officially became Saint Leo University, reflecting its broader mission and graduate offerings. Over time, Saint Leo University expanded through online education and regional centers, becoming known for serving military personnel and adult learners nationwide.
