History

Prairie View A & M University was founded in 1876 as the Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth, established under the Texas Constitution of 1876 to provide higher education for African Americans during Reconstruction. Located in Prairie View, Texas, the institution initially focused on teacher training and agricultural and mechanical instruction. Over time, it expanded its curriculum and was renamed several times, becoming Prairie View University in 1945 and Prairie View A&M College of Texas in 1947. In 1973, it officially became Prairie View A & M University and continued to grow as a comprehensive institution within the Texas A&M University System. A 1984 constitutional amendment granted it access to the Permanent University Fund. In the 21st century, Prairie View A & M University expanded research activity, achieved Carnegie R2 classification, and increased doctoral offerings, shaping its modern academic profile.
