Middle Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 as Middle Tennessee State Normal School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with a primary mission of training teachers for the state’s public schools. The institution opened on September 11, 1911, under the leadership of its first president, Robert Lee Jones, offering a two-year program in teacher education. In 1925, it became Middle Tennessee State Teachers College and expanded to a four-year degree-granting institution.
