History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 in Beaumont, Texas, as South Park Junior College, operating within South Park High School under the leadership of its first president, Louis R. Pietzsch. In 1932, the institution was renamed Lamar College to reflect its broader regional role and was named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, a former president of the Republic of Texas. The college expanded its academic offerings over the following decades and became Lamar State College of Technology in 1949 as it transitioned into a four-year institution. In 1971, it officially adopted the name Lamar University, marking its development into a comprehensive university. During the late twentieth century, Lamar University expanded graduate programs, joined the Texas State University System in 1995, and invested in campus growth and research initiatives, shaping its modern identity as a public university in Southeast Texas.
