Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus

Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus is a public research university located in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, during a period when state leaders sought to industrialize Georgia after the Civil War. The first classes were held in 1888 in Atlanta, and Isaac S. Hopkins served as the institution’s first president. Initially focused on mechanical engineering and practical industrial education, the school expanded its curriculum in the early twentieth century. The Georgia Tech Research Institute was chartered in 1919 and became active in 1934, strengthening research activity. In 1948, the school was renamed the Georgia Institute of Technology to reflect its broader scientific and technological mission. Women were first admitted in 1952, marking a significant institutional change. Over the decades, Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus grew into a major public research university, joining the Association of American Universities in 2010 and continuing to expand its global and research presence from its Atlanta campus.
