History

CUNY City College was founded in 1847 as the Free Academy of the City of New York, created to provide tuition-free higher education to graduates of the city’s public schools. It became the College of the City of New York in 1866 and later adopted the name City College of New York. Located in Manhattan, the institution moved to its current Hamilton Heights campus in the early twentieth century. In 1961, it became a senior college within the newly established City University of New York system. Throughout the twentieth century, CUNY City College expanded its academic offerings, including the development of engineering and science programs and later doctoral authority in selected fields. Over time, CUNY City College evolved into a comprehensive public research university serving undergraduate and graduate students across New York City.
