History

Cleveland State University was founded in 1964 when the Ohio General Assembly established it as a state-assisted institution in Cleveland, Ohio. The new university incorporated Fenn College, a private institution founded in 1929 that had grown out of the YMCA’s educational programs. In its early years, Cleveland State University focused on serving commuting students and expanding access to higher education in Northeast Ohio. During the late 1960s and 1970s, the university developed new academic colleges and expanded its downtown campus along Euclid Avenue. The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, whose origins date to 1897, became part of the university, strengthening its professional programs. Over time, Cleveland State University broadened its research activity, added residential facilities, and invested in campus modernization. Today, it operates as a comprehensive public research university with a strong urban mission and community partnerships.
