History

Worcester Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1865 in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the height of the American Industrial Revolution. Established as the Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science through the efforts of John Boynton and Ichabod Washburn, the school aimed to unite scientific theory with practical training. The institute formally opened in 1868 under its first president, Charles O. Thompson. In 1887, it adopted the name Worcester Polytechnic Institute as its programs expanded. During the twentieth century, Worcester Polytechnic Institute added new engineering disciplines, developed graduate studies, and constructed major laboratory facilities. In 1970, it introduced the WPI Plan, emphasizing project-based learning and interdisciplinary study. Over time, the university expanded research activity, global project centers, and campus infrastructure, evolving into a doctoral university with significant research output while maintaining its founding emphasis on applied science and engineering education.
