History

Woodbury University was founded in 1884 in Los Angeles, California, as Woodbury’s Business College by educator Francis C. Woodbury. Established to meet the needs of the city’s growing commercial sector, the institution initially focused on practical business education, including bookkeeping and commercial law. In 1926, the college was chartered by the State of California to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees, marking a significant step in its academic development. In 1931, it expanded into professional arts and design fields closely connected to business. The institution moved to a new Wilshire Boulevard campus in 1937 and continued to broaden its offerings during the twentieth century. In 1974, Woodbury College officially became Woodbury University. In 1985, the university relocated to its current campus in Burbank. Today, Woodbury University offers programs across business, architecture, design, media, and liberal arts disciplines.
