History

Williams Baptist University was founded in 1941 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, by Arkansas Baptists led by pastor Dr. H. E. Williams. Originally established as Southern Baptist College, the institution began as a two-year junior college serving the educational needs of the region. In 1946, a fire destroyed its principal building, prompting relocation to the former Walnut Ridge Army Flying School property. The college gradually expanded its academic offerings and began granting four-year bachelor’s degrees in 1984. In 1991, the name was changed to Williams Baptist College in honor of founder and first president H. E. Williams. The institution achieved accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission in 1963 and later introduced graduate programs in 2017. Reflecting its broader academic scope, Williams Baptist University adopted its current name in 2018, continuing its mission as a Christian university in northeast Arkansas.
