Western Connecticut State University

Western Connecticut State University is a public university located in Danbury, Connecticut. Founded in 1903, it is part of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Western Connecticut State University was founded in 1903 as the Danbury State Normal School in Danbury, Connecticut, to train teachers for the state’s public schools. Classes began in 1904, and the institution steadily expanded its enrollment and academic offerings in the early twentieth century. In 1937, it became Danbury State Teachers College, reflecting its authority to grant bachelor’s degrees in education, with Ralph Jenkins serving as its first president under that title. The institution was renamed Danbury State College in 1959 as it broadened into four-year liberal arts programs. In 1967 it became Western Connecticut State College, and construction of the Westside campus began in the 1970s to support growth. In 1983, Western Connecticut State University achieved university status. Today, Western Connecticut State University operates as part of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system.
