History

Western Colorado University was founded in 1901 when the Colorado legislature approved the establishment of the Colorado State Normal School in Gunnison. Created to train teachers for the Western Slope, the institution opened its first classes in 1911 with a small cohort of students. In 1914, James Herbert Kelley was named the first president. The school expanded its academic scope in 1923, becoming Western State College of Colorado and transitioning to a four-year institution offering bachelor’s degrees. After World War II, enrollment grew as returning veterans attended under the GI Bill, prompting further campus development. In 2012, the institution became Western State Colorado University, and in 2019 it adopted the name Western Colorado University. Today, Western Colorado University continues to build on its teacher education roots while offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs in Gunnison, Colorado.
