History

West Texas A & M University was founded in 1910 as West Texas State Normal College in Canyon, Texas, to train teachers for the rapidly growing region. Its first president, Robert B. Cousins, led the institution during its early development, including rebuilding after a fire destroyed the main building in 1914. The school’s name changed to West Texas State Teachers College in 1923 and later to West Texas State College in 1949 as academic offerings expanded beyond teacher education. In 1963 it became West Texas State University, reflecting broader graduate and professional programs. On September 1, 1990, the institution joined the Texas A&M University System, and in 1993 it adopted the name West Texas A & M University. Over time, West Texas A & M University has grown into a comprehensive regional university serving the Texas Panhandle with diverse undergraduate and graduate programs.
