Wabash College

Wabash College is a private liberal arts men’s college located in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Wabash College was founded on November 21, 1832, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, by Presbyterian ministers and local leaders who sought to provide classical and moral education on the American frontier. Originally known as the Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College, the institution began offering classes in 1833. Elihu W. Baldwin became the first president in 1835, helping to establish an early curriculum centered on classical studies and theology. Despite financial hardship and a campus fire in 1838, Wabash College rebuilt and expanded its academic programs during the 19th century. The college remained committed to educating men even as many institutions adopted coeducation, reaffirming its single-sex status in a 1992 campus referendum. Over time, Wabash College developed into a modern liberal arts institution while preserving traditions such as the Gentleman’s Rule and its historic campus in Crawfordsville.
