History

Virginia Military Institute was founded in 1839 in Lexington, Virginia, as a state-supported military college designed to prepare citizen-soldiers and leaders. French-born engineer Claudius Crozet served as its first president, shaping its early academic and military structure. In 1857, admission expanded beyond Virginia residents, and during the Civil War the Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market in 1864. After the war, Virginia Military Institute rebuilt its campus and continued developing its engineering and liberal arts programs. In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Virginia that its male-only admissions policy was unconstitutional, and women entered the Corps of Cadets in 1997. Since then, Virginia Military Institute has evolved into a coeducational public institution that maintains its military system while offering a broad undergraduate curriculum.
