History

Vincennes University history begins in 1801, when territorial governor William Henry Harrison founded Jefferson Academy in Vincennes, Indiana. It was incorporated as Vincennes University on November 29, 1806, becoming the first college in the Indiana Territory and the only public university established before statehood. During the early nineteenth century, Vincennes University operated amid political and financial challenges, including a long dispute over state support after Indiana University was created in 1820. In 1889, the institution was rechartered as a two-year university, helping shape the junior college movement in Indiana. Over time, Vincennes University expanded its academic offerings to include technical, transfer, and workforce programs. In the twenty-first century, it introduced select bachelor’s degrees and developed additional campuses and learning centers, evolving into a statewide institution rooted in its historic Vincennes campus.
