History

Vanguard University of Southern California traces its origins to 1920, when Harold K. Needham, D. W. Kerr, and W. C. Peirce founded the Southern California Bible School in Los Angeles to prepare Christian workers for ministry. The school moved to Pasadena in 1927 and, in 1939, was chartered by the State of California as Southern California Bible College, becoming the first four-year institution of the Assemblies of God. In 1950, the institution relocated to its present campus in Costa Mesa. As academic offerings expanded beyond Bible training into the liberal arts, the name changed to Southern California College in 1959. Regional accreditation was granted in 1964, and graduate programs were later introduced. In 1999, Southern California College officially became Vanguard University of Southern California, reflecting its broader academic scope and university status.
