History

The University of Southern Indiana was founded on September 15, 1965, as Indiana State University–Evansville, created to expand access to public higher education in southwestern Indiana. In 1967, David L. Rice was appointed to lead the campus, and under his leadership the institution expanded its academic offerings and campus infrastructure. Ground was broken in 1968 for a permanent campus west of Evansville, and the university gradually developed academic buildings and student services. On April 16, 1985, legislation established the University of Southern Indiana as an autonomous state university, effective July 1, 1985. After independence, University of Southern Indiana added student housing, expanded degree programs, and increased enrollment. In the 2000s, campus growth continued with new facilities and a long-term master plan. In 2022, University of Southern Indiana transitioned to NCAA Division I athletics, marking another milestone in its institutional development.
