History

The University of South Dakota was founded in 1862 by the Dakota Territorial Legislature in Vermillion, making it the oldest public university in the state. Although authorized in 1862, the institution began holding classes in 1882 under the name University of Dakota. Ephraim Epstein served as the first president and primary faculty member when instruction started in borrowed space before the completion of Old Main in 1883. After South Dakota achieved statehood in 1889, the institution was renamed the University of South Dakota in 1891. During the early twentieth century, the University of South Dakota expanded academically, establishing the School of Law in 1901 and the School of Medicine in 1907, followed by graduate and fine arts programs. Over time, the university developed into a comprehensive public research institution and remains the only university in South Dakota with both a law school and a medical school.
