History

The University of Northern Iowa was founded in 1876 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, as the Iowa State Normal School, created by the Iowa General Assembly to train teachers for the state’s growing public school system. Classes began on September 6, 1876, in facilities formerly used as a Civil War orphanage. In 1909, the institution was renamed Iowa State Teachers College, reflecting its expanded academic programs and four-year degree offerings. It became the State College of Iowa in 1961 as its curriculum broadened beyond teacher education. In 1967, the institution adopted the name University of Northern Iowa to signify its comprehensive university status. Over time, the University of Northern Iowa developed colleges in business, humanities, social sciences, and graduate studies, while maintaining strong roots in teacher education. Today, it serves thousands of students and remains a key public university in Iowa’s higher education system.
