History

The University of Montevallo was founded on October 12, 1896, as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School in Montevallo, Alabama. Established to provide technical and practical education for young women, the institution initially focused on subjects such as bookkeeping, domestic science, and teacher training. Under its first president, Henry Clay Reynolds, enrollment grew steadily, and the curriculum expanded beyond industrial training. In 1911, the school became the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute, and in 1923 it was renamed Alabama College, State College for Women, reflecting its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. The college became coeducational in 1956 following legislative action. In 1969, Alabama College was officially renamed the University of Montevallo. Today, the University of Montevallo operates as Alabama’s public liberal arts university, maintaining its historic campus and liberal arts mission.
