History

University of Missouri-St Louis was founded in 1963 to expand access to affordable public higher education in the St. Louis region. Its creation followed local efforts in the late 1950s to establish a public institution that would serve students who could not attend private universities in the area. The campus was developed on the former Bellerive Country Club grounds in St. Louis County, and early classes were held in temporary facilities while permanent buildings such as Benton Hall were constructed. In 1976, University of Missouri-St Louis expanded through the acquisition of Marillac College, forming what is now known as the south campus. Over the following decades, the university broadened its academic offerings, added research initiatives, and strengthened ties with regional employers. Today, University of Missouri-St Louis operates as a comprehensive public research university within the University of Missouri System.
