University of Hawaii-West Oahu

University of Hawaii–West Oahu is a public four-year institution located in Kapolei on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It is part of the University of Hawaii system and primarily serves students from the Leeward and Central Oahu communities. The university offers undergraduate degrees in fields such as business administration, public administration, education, health sciences, creative media, cybersecurity, and social sciences. Originally established to expand access to baccalaureate education for working adults, it has evolved into a comprehensive undergraduate campus with a modern residential setting. Students are often drawn to its community-focused mission, flexible learning options, and emphasis on Native Hawaiian and regional issues.

University of Hawaii-West Oahu was established in 1976 as West Oahu College following years of legislative discussion about expanding baccalaureate education to Oahu’s Leeward Coast. Classes began in January 1976 with 75 students meeting in local high schools. The institution was created to increase access for place-bound and working students who could not easily attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 1989, the campus was renamed University of Hawaii–West Oahu to reflect its integration within the University of Hawaii system. For decades it operated as an upper-division institution, adding lower-division courses in 2007 and transitioning into a full four-year university. In 2012, University of Hawaii-West Oahu moved to a newly constructed campus in Kapolei. Subsequent additions, including academic and health science facilities, have supported its continued growth as a comprehensive undergraduate campus in West Oahu.
