University of Colorado Colorado Springs

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs is a public research university located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Established in 1965, it is one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across colleges including Letters, Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering and Applied Science; Nursing and Health Sciences; and Public Service. Classified among doctoral universities with high research activity, it maintains strong connections to the military, aerospace, and technology sectors in the Pikes Peak region. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs was founded in 1965 after local leaders and state officials worked to expand the University of Colorado system into the Pikes Peak region. Early classes were held in the former Cragmor Sanatorium, which had been sold to the state in 1964 to establish a permanent campus. From 1965 to 1972, the campus operated as the Colorado Springs Center under the University of Colorado Boulder before gaining greater autonomy. In 1974, the position of chancellor was formally established, with Lawrence Silverman serving as the first chancellor of University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Over the following decades, the university expanded its academic offerings, adding colleges in business, engineering, public service, and nursing.
