History

University of Cincinnati-Main Campus traces its origins to 1819 with the founding of Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio. William Lytle served as the first president of the early Cincinnati College. In 1870, following a bequest from Charles McMicken, the institution was officially chartered by the Ohio legislature as the University of Cincinnati. Classes began in 1873, establishing a municipal university intended to serve the city’s growing population. In 1906, the university introduced one of the nation’s first cooperative education programs under Herman Schneider, integrating academic study with paid work experience. Throughout the twentieth century, University of Cincinnati-Main Campus expanded its academic divisions, research capacity, and professional schools. In 1977, it transitioned from a municipal institution to a state university. Today, University of Cincinnati-Main Campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates as a comprehensive public research university with a strong emphasis on experiential learning.
